For Christmas, my hubby surprised me with a voucher to visit the Feversham Spa in Helmsley, Yorkshire. Double the surprise was that my friends’ husbands surprised them with the same so we all got to go together! The voucher was for June so that we would hopefully have good weather and so we went last week.
I’ve never been to Helmsley before but my Grandma told me it was one of her favourite places and not to miss out the amazing walks and the famous Yorkshire Sweet shop! We obviously made the latter a priority!
When we arrived at the hotel I was surprised by how small it was but couldn’t wait to discover what was inside.
We were told we’d been upgraded to a suite (hurray) but the room wasn’t ready yet so we took a walk around the hotel and we went for a walk round Helmsley. The town is literally a 1-minute walk from the hotel and is so quaint; I’ve never seen so many tea rooms in one place!
As it didn’t take us long looking around the town we decided to do the recommended walk to Rievaulx Abbey. Relying on my husband’s sense of direction we got lost and ended up taking a different route to an unknown destination so decided to return to the hotel before we got truly lost.
At this point our room was ready. The suite comprised of our bedroom, a lounge with cosy fire, and a bathroom with what I thought was just a bath until I discovered the walk-in shower hiding behind the door. The products in the bathroom were Temple Spa. I’ve never used Temple Spa products before but I have to say I was so impressed. We were in the new part of the hotel and so the room was really lovely. One of our friends was in the older section and I have to say if I was in there (despite not being in the room much) I would not have been too pleased (tip: ask to stay in one of the newer rooms).
If you’re looking for a health spa with a gym then this isn’t the place for you. My husband was shocked to discover there was no gym (apparently they did have one but no one ever used it). However, it suited me perfectly and so relaxation was number 1 on the agenda (the hubby obviously went for a long run).
That night we took the short work to the famous Black Swan and although the meal was lovely it was very expensive and we were the youngest people in there by about 50 years.
The next day despite the grim weather forecast the sun came out in all its glory. This was perfect to get the full benefit of Feversham Spa’s heated outdoor pool, hot tub jacuzzi, and sunbeds. The sun was a complete surprise and none of us had any sunscreen much to my horror! The hotel didn’t have any we could use or buy so I definitely think they should have a supply of this for their guests in case of emergencies! We had a lovely poolside lunch accompanied by some Pimms and were definitely fully relaxed and in the holiday spirit – despite only being 40 mins from home.
Within the spa, there’s also a heat experience where we made use of the sauna, steam room, foot spa, aromatherapy room and monsoon shower (where you choose from tropical warmth or arctic cool settings to suit your mood).
There’s also a relaxation lounge with cosy cushions and magazines but as the weather was so nice there was not much point being in there, although one of my friends did full asleep on the sofa! In the winter it would be nice if this room had massage chairs to enhance the relaxing experience.
Later on that afternoon, we all had our 75-minute treatments that were included in our booking. You could have 2 treatments within that time so most of us went for a 40-minute massage and 35-minute facial. Despite all having different therapists we all agreed that they were some of the best treatments we have ever had!
That evening we all had the most delicious meal at the Weathervane Restaurant within the hotel. Every mouthful was amazing and the service was second to none. Our fabulous maître d made sure that everything was perfect and he was also hilarious! The next morning we had breakfast there that was equally as scrumptious with both the continental and a la carte options included in the package.
We all had a fantastic time at the Feversham Spa hotel. The great company definitely helps but the service, food, and products were all fantastic. It’s not a large spa by any means but it proved that size definitely isn’t everything. There are often great deals here too and you can just go for the day if you don’t live too far away. The surrounding area is also gorgeous. Definitely check out this little haven in Yorkshire if you get the chance.
