We may be approaching the winter season but this week I faced coldness like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Embracing the future of health & beauty I took the plunge in a Cryotherapy Chamber!
If you haven’t heard of cryotherapy before, the literal translation is cold therapy. When the body is submitted to temperatures as low as -160C the benefits include muscle recovery, skin rejuvenation, and even hangover cures! Athletes and Celebrities that swear by its healing properties include Cristiano Ronaldo, the Leicester City football team, Daniel Craig and Demi Moore. Knowing all this I was so excited to try it out myself!
Future Therapies invited me to try Leeds’ first Whole Body Cryo Chamber. The salon is very spa-like and calm until you’re asked to slip on a ‘cryo outfit’! My getup consisted of, a cropped top, knee-length socks, gloves, a face mask, a headband to protect my ears and to top it off was told to wear clogs, oy a clog! It was not a pretty sight but at least it took my mind off the fact I was about to be submerged into freezing temperatures whilst expecting someone to surprise me from You’ve Been Framed!
When the chamber door has opened a gust of frozen air escapes and it all feels very Star Trek! There’s a window on the chamber that can be lowered if you’re feeling a little claustrophobic, and the door isn’t locked so you can leave at any time. I didn’t feel trapped as I was able to be heard by the attendant who also checked in with me that I was ok and played some cheesy tunes to take my mind off the cold.
The 3 minutes did pass quite quickly but towards the end, I was beginning to feel EXTREMELY cold and I couldn’t have tolerated it a second longer (quite literally as much longer and you could die)!
When I left the chamber I was given a lovely warm robe to wear and was comfortable very quickly. I also experienced a sense of happiness which is down to the endorphins that are released, a lot like when you’ve had a great workout at the gym. What I was even more excited about was burning up to 800 calories in the 24 hours following the session!
Actual Cryotherapy has been around for years such as using cold baths to ease muscle pain or ice packs on injuries, but Cryo Chambers are a convenient way to reap the rewards. As with any treatment, a course is recommended to get significant results. Future Therapies list some of the benefits as:
Future Therapies teamed up with My Beauty Spot to give away a CryoChamber experience – well done to Jo, let us know what you thought!
